With the majority control of both the House and the Senate, Republicans are now wrapping their arms around the word “governance”. The clear impression is that they wish to interpret this as “political expedience”. When it comes to the hard decisions, political expedience will be their top-level deciding criteria—but is this OK with grassroots Republican voters?
In the United States, members of Congress take this oath: I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God. There is no “unless it is politically expedient to do otherwise” get-out-of-a-tight-spot escape clause in this oath. To assert political expedience as rationalization for not abiding by the Constitution or its Rule of Law is indication of having taken the oath with a mental reservation or intent to evade, is it not?
Grassroots Republican voters, now having handed the majority control of Congress to Republicans, must insist that our Republican elected representatives abide faithfully by their oath of office. No Congressional vote should be cast that violates this oath, enables other government officials to violate their oath, or affirms the appointment of a new government official that has already indicated by action or evasion that they will violate the oath.
Further, the central purpose of holding Congressional hearings is for members of Congress to be knowledgeable when casting their votes. Ignorance of violations of the Constitution, most especially when blatantly obvious through evasive Congressional testimony, is no excuse for casting a vote that defies or enables government officials to not support and defend the Constitution. All government officials must be held to this high standard with respect to their exercising the power of their elected office. No official should be confirmed where there is doubt, right?
Grassroots Republican voters need to hold each of our elected representatives to this fundamental standard of good governance.
We need to let out representatives know that we hold them accountable and expect them to hold all other government officials accountable.
Remember: Politics is all about WHO rules us and HOW they rule us. If we do not like the HOW, then we need to replace the WHO in 2016.
