News for May 21, 2012

“I believe the states can best govern our home concerns, and the general [federal] government our foreign ones. I wish, therefore, to see maintained that wholesome distribution of powers established by the Constitution for the limitation of both; and never to see all offices transferred to Washington, where, further withdrawn from the eyes of the people, they may more secretly be bought and sold as at market.”- Thomas Jefferson, letter to Judge William Johnson, Monticello, June 12, 1823; Bergh 15:450

Distribution of Powers

Jefferson and the Founders were very specific in separating the powers of government for a very good reason:  they knew from their learning that government can be a force for good but it can also be corrupted into being a force for evil.  In order to check that tendency, they allowed the most power closest to the people, or locally, with the residual enumerated to the federal government.   Locally,  we can know our representatives better – maybe even living next door to them – and our representatives are equally affected by whatever laws/ordinances they impose.

Where We Are and What To Do

Much emphasis is placed on the national elections, and rightly so; however, we should not neglect our efforts locally. The DTP will be alerting you to opportunities to learn more about the issues we are facing but also to opportunities to become involved to the extent you are willing and able.

A primary emphasis this year is to get out the conservative vote.  As many as 30 million conservative voters did not go to the polls in previous elections; many are not even registered! To overcome this, we are actively working to register these voters so that their voices can join with ours in the election this year and elect more conservative representation, even to the White House! At this point, there are volunteers covering Montgomery County in the voter registration drive; thanks to the many volunteers who are taking precincts and dropping off voter registrations.Another operation is True the Vote ( truethevote.org ) to validate voter registrations; this is an effort to identify voters who have died and fraudulent voter registrations.  Visit the website for more information in how you can help with this from your home.

For an opportunity to ‘drink from a firehose’ of information, this convention is a must.  Scheduled for June 29-30 at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, the Convention is a gathering of speakers and workshops on many topics:  the Federal Reserve, maintaining your liberty group, education and many others (see link at the side of the newsletter for a complete roster of breakouts). This is well worth your time and effort to become more educated on our challenges/opportunities.

The golf outing last year was a rousing success and as such, bears repeating. This year the scramble will be July 20, 2012 with a shotgun start at noon at Penn Terra Golf Course in Lewisburg, Ohio.  Starting with lunch, a speaker, great golf, hole prizes, dinner and a grand prize, come out for a day of fun golfing or volunteer to help.  The proceeds will help support the DTP and its’ efforts in this years’ election.
We are in the midst of a struggle to maintain our freedoms.  What we do has significance; just as importantly, what we fail to do also has consequences.  Join us on the side of doing!
